What is an Epidemic?

An epidemic is a disease that infects a large area and lots of people. Epidemics are when a disease goes from person to person faster than doctors thought it would. If the disease spreads over the whole world, sometimes it is called a pandemic.

Some causes of epidemics are:
Changes to farming practices as happened with the bird flu.
Poor diets
Poor medical procedures
Viruses evolving
Dirty water and food.
People travelling
Climate Change

Epidemics in History.
There have been several famous and dangerous epidemics in human history. Recently we have experienced the Swine Flu Epidemic. Another infamous epidemic was the Black Plague of the Middle Ages. It killed 50% of the population of Europe which is estimated to be 450 million people.
